Cephalozia connivens:
__________________________________________________________________________________ Cephalozia connivens (Dicks.) Lindb. Forcipated Pincerwort __________________________________________________________________________________
|
This liverwort has flattened pincer-shaped leaves that are almost longitudinally inserted, in common with the closely related species C. lunulifolia, C. macrostachya, and C. loitlesbergeri. It has very long decurrent margins to the rear of its leaves, much more so than the others, and together with C. loitlesbergeri is monoecious, the other two being dioecious. It has leaf cells that at the base of the lobes are much larger at 32-56mm long and 32-56mm wide than those of C. lunulifolia & C. loitlesbergeri, but all of these species need to have perianths for certain identification. [see illustrated key]. They are all plants of shaded, boggy sites growing on Sphagnum, Leucobryum or on wet rotting wood in very acid conditions compared with C. bicuspidata which will tolerate a range of pH from 1-3.
