                                                                                                                                            Planted/Naturalized

Introduced. A large alien deciduous fern with delicate fronds to c.1m that die back with the first frost, hence its name, that is grown in gardens and is naturalized in a few places in the U.K. Its fronds are simply pinnate with a winged rachis and pinnae with a wavy margin and arise singly from long creeping rhizomes. As in the case of the hard fern, Bletchnum spicant, it has separate one to two pinnate fertile fronds that have very narrow pinnae and compact clusters of sori that resemble rows of beads (Hence its other common name of Bead Fern).

It is not naturalized in Essex, but has been planted and persists in at least two sites, one in each Vice County.

TQ(51)59  582/3,910 18 Warley Place, derelict garden, well naturalized by pond, 1964. Stanley T Jermyn.
TL(52)82  839,254 19 Marks Hall Estate, presumably planted but well established amongst native vegetation on banks of Robins Brook. 31 March 1981. Jeremy Ison; still present 22 June 2001. Terri Tarpey.
