Dryopteris carthusiana (Vill.) H.P.Fuchs                                                                        Narrow Buckler-Fern

___________________________________________________________________________________

Light 6. Wetness 8. pH 4 to 6. Fertility 4.  Height  <1m

Essex Status: Native.

Native. This fern is frequently confused with the much commoner D. dilatata. It grows in a wide range of damp lowland habitats where the atmosphere is permanently humid and the soil moderately acidic in reaction (pH4-6); wet heath, wet woodland, stream sides, fens, bogs and lake margins, preferring deep rich alluvial soils rather than acid boggy but infertile sites. It frequently grows in water-saturated Sphagnum and Juncus dominated communities, under relatively open-canopy, Alnus, Salix or Betula carr. Its distribution is thinning out nationally through loss of habitat.  The fronds are generally narrower, paler-green  and less leathery than those of D. dilatata, and are generally held erect, only flopping over at the tip; and emerge from a creeping rhizome, so that bunches of fronds appear to arise in lines from their typically buried crowns, rather than flopping over in an arc, and arising from an obvious single shuttlecock as in D. dilatata. The basal stipes are  sparcely clothed with delicate pale-brown, soft, concolorous scales, in contrast to the usually centrally dark-brown-striped rather stiff scales of D. dilatata. As in D. dilatata the fronds are divided 3-times (unlike the D. filix-mass-affinis ferns) into pinnae, then into pinnules and finally into serrated-margined pinnulets, the saw-like teeth incurving and ending in needle-like spines visible with the naked eye. D. dilatata frequently grows amongst it, though elevated on less water-soaked rotting tree trunks, tree bases or hummocks, and they hybridise, the offspring [D. x deweveri] resembling a narrow-fronded D. dilatata with dark scales and largely abortive spores. The latter is under-recorded in Essex. D. carthusiana is thinly scattered across the county, largely absent in the north west sector, but quite common in damp marshy areas and along rides in woods. Very much under-recorded.

Dryopteris x deweveri (J.T.Jansen) Jansen & Wacht.    (D. carthusiana x dilatata )

___________________________________________________________________________________

This hybrid is overlooked nationally as well as in Essex, but is believed to be common where the two parents grow together.

It has been noted at Kelvedon Hatch by Tim Pyner (specimen deposited in Southend Central Museum Herbarium), and as a record to be confirmed: by the Ching Brook, just South of Ranger's Road in Epping Forest.
