Essex Calamints - identification [see below for C. ascendens and C. calamintha text & distribution]       MAP

Lesser Calamint is a short-lived perennial, largely now confined to south-east England, with the bulk of the population occurring in Essex and southern Suffolk, with a few scattered sites in Norfolk, Cambs. and Kent. Unfortunately, the Essex records have in the past been hopelessly confused with those of C. ascendens, formerly grown for use as a herbal tea, and curiously absent from most of Essex. The confusion arose because in hindsight, the latter has been found in only a handful of sites on the chalk in the north west of the county. Virtually all the Calamint colonies in Essex are C. calamintha, but we were all (including Stanley Jermyn) trying to pigeon hole plants into two taxa, because being so rare in the county we were unfamiliar with C. ascendens, yet felt sure we must be overlooking it. Furthermore, there are forms of C. calamintha that are somewhat intermediate and may result from introgression (Easy 1993). In general, the two can be separated by their leaves, calyces, and their habit. C. ascendens as its name suggests produces largely ascending inflorescences, whereas those of C. calamintha are  somewhat prostrate and spreading. The leaves of C. calamintha are up to 30x26mm, rather grey-green, particularly later in the season when they become increasingly hairy; whereas those of C. ascendens are larger, 42x35mm, lighter green, with more prominent secondary veins, and tend to be rather convex. The degree of serration/crenation of the margins varies in both from virtually no indentation to quite sharply serrate. The petioles are up to 25mm in C. ascendens and to 15mm in C. calamintha. The flowers of C. calamintha are whitish suffused with lilac, in closeup, with pale lilac markings in the throat, but at a distance they look pale bluish grey. Whereas those of C. ascendens are larger, again whitish, but suffused with pale pinkish-lilac and with obvious red-purple spotting on the lower lip and in the throat. The slightly larger flowers have a wider upper lip with the edges slightly reflexed - and they come into flower several weeks earlier. C. calamintha, however, flowers on into November, and sets seed in late autumn, making it very vulnerable to flail mowing. Five bunches of white hairs just inside the calyx tube serve to delay seed release. In C. ascendens they arise almost at right angles, forming a more or less flat intersecting grid, whereas in C. calamintha they arise at a shallow angle and intersect to form a cone that protrudes slightly beyond the tubular part of the calyx. Stella Ross-Craig (1979) says that the anthers of C. calamintha are cream coloured and those of C. ascendens scarlet. This would be a useful character if it applied throughout both populations, but both our plants can have deep lilac anthers, though those of C. ascendens can sometimes be red or have a slight reddish tinge to the lilac. In both taxa the two lower calyx teeth are curved upwards, but in C. ascendens they have consistently longer, spaced hairs, looking like a comb and obvious to the naked eye, of about the same width as the base of the calyx teeth (0.2-0.6mm), whereas in C. calamintha they are relatively inconspicuous, shorter than the width of the teeth (to c.0.2mm), with only the occasional long hair. The lower pair of calyx teeth themselves overlap in length between the two taxa, although they are on average slightly longer (to 3.0mm) in C. ascendens. In addition C. calamintha plants tend to be sprawling, with denser cymes of flowers, whereas C. ascendens, as its name suggests, is more of an upright plant with more distant less closely bunched fascicles of flowers. Unfortunately, probably because most botanists only see C. calamintha on a herbarium sheet, the characters emphasized for their separation, overlap in size and form far more than suggested, and are pretty useless unless you have both plants to hand for comparison. The bulk of the British population occurs in N. Essex, Vc19, where it faithfully follows exposures of the pre-Anglian glaciation Kesgrave gravels of the once mighty pre-glacial Thames; - when it rose in the Welsh mountains and flowed north eastwards across our county into Suffolk. Isolated populations also occur on superficial sandy/loamy deposits on top of the chalky boulder clay and chalk, and on the Thanet sands (in the south of county). It is also a plant of calcareous walls and brick tombs. It likes open, warm, usually south facing habitats and is sensitive to heavy frosts. It produces copious seeds, however, that readily regenerate it in situ, but they are not easily dispersed. At the present day it is largely confined to churchyard walls, graves, roadside verges, banks and disused railway lines. In days gone by, however, it was a common plant of lightly grazed calcareous pastures. It is suffering from flail mowing in churchyards and on verges and is slowly disappearing from these habitats, mainly because, not being allowed to set seed in late autumn, its seed bank becomes depleted. It seems to be a truly native plant that probably colonised the vast sand and gravel wastes laid bare by the retreat of the Anglian glaciers as soon as it became warm enough to do so, and has remained in the same area ever since. Its probably our most special `Essex plant'. As it survives predominantly in churchyards, we chose it as our emblem for the Essex Churchyards Conservation Group project, and it is featured on the best kept churchyard certificate. We are in the process of mapping every patch in the county as a base line for monitoring its decline and to promote its conservation. Recorded from 93 monads. [Several sites recorded in Jermyn (1974), have still to be investigated].

ASCENDENS     Calyx 5-8mm long, lower teeth 2-3(3.5)mm  with numerous hairs >0.2mm, throat hairs forming flat plate

CALMINTHA    Calyx 3-6mm long, lower teeth 1-2mm, with hairs all <0.1mm or a few >0.2mm, throat hairs forming protruding cone.

They form fertile hybrids (Cambridge Botanic Garden results, Sell & Murrell).
