3rd Flora of Essex         [scroll down for Taxa file buttons]

Two Floras of Essex have been published to date, that by George Stacy Gibson in 1862 and that by Stanley Jermyn and Ken Adams in 1974. A new 3rd Flora of Essex is being compiled and will be displayed on this site in 'bits and pieces' to allow other botanists to criticise and contribute as sections become available.  We are concentrating initially on rare and locally scarce species accounts, and distribution data which will be added to as they are compiled. In addition we are mapping all species on a 1 x 1km square level, and less common species at the 100x100m square level, for the eventual production of an accompanying Atlas of Essex Plants. The latter maps are filed here along with the accounts of each species. A partial Flora and Atlas, with 1x1km sq. maps, covering the Colchester Natural History Society recording area; Wild Flowers of North East Essex by Terri Tarpey and Jeremy Heath was published in 1990. 3rd Flora of Essex interim accounts of the STONEWORTS, FERNS & FERN ALLIES and the HAWKWEEDS of Essex have been published in the Essex Naturalist Numbers 14, 29 and 28 respectively and have been continuously updated on the site.
