Abstract

The Sulphur Clover is largely confined to the Chalky Boulder Clay glacial tills of eastern England, with the bulk of the remaining population in Suffolk and Essex. Its distribution has been mapped at the 100m square level in Essex where it has been recorded from a total of 421 squares since 1973. All but a handful of sites are now confined to roadside verges and many of these have now been lost and continue to be lost due to inappropriate management.

Introduction

The Sulphur Clover is an attractive, shortly rhizomatous perennial clover, with elliptic-lanceolate, shortly pubescent leaflets (narrower, more pointed and more grey-green than T. pratense) and with 20-40mm heads of pale yellowish-white flowers, that become brownish-orange as soon as they are over (when fully over the flowers are difficult to distinguish from T. pratense). The flowers mature from the base upwards, so that the heads soon look scruffy with a yellowish-white upper and a brownish-orange lower section. The flowering period is very short, usually only a few days in June or July, the timing depending on the weather in any one year. A plant predominantly of the Chalky Boulder Clays of East Anglia, but also found on other loamy clays in eastern England. Probably a post-glacial relict of early colonization of the vast expanses of bare Chalky Boulder Clay till left behind by the Anglian ice sheet. Typically a pioneer species on raw, friable, well-drained, low nutrient status, usually calcareous, mineral clay soils, such as those of the Hanslope Association, being competed out of existence unless other vegetation is kept in check by grazing or mowing. It often colonises newly exposed Chalky Boulder Clay then disappears as the sward matures. Formerly a common plant of pastures, meadows, green lanes, churchyards and roadside verges on the boulder clays, but now virtually confined to road verges due to the ploughing up of pastures, meadows and green lanes, particularly on the fertile Chalky Boulder Clays, which can be cropped year after year with cereals. Formerly widespread west to Herts., Beds., and Northants., and north through Cambs. to Lincs. There is a surviving pocket in south-east Norfolk that merges with the bulk of the remaining population which stretches diagonally across Suffolk and into north-west Essex, but there is a further substantial outlier in south-west Cambs., Hunts. and Beds. The Herts. populations are now down to a handful of verge sites. The Lincs. population is down to two sites, and the sites on our Essex verges are being gradually destroyed by dumping of road metal, flail mowing during the flowering season, and the increasing practice of incessant lawn mowing of verges for several hundred meters either side of country house and farms. A few scattered isolated plants and colonies occur, or have occurred, elsewhere in Britain, but most of these have not been seen since 1970.

Status and Distribution

As it occurred in more than 16, but less than 100 of the 10km sqs. in the U.K., Sulphur Clover was designated as one of the `BSBI Scarce’ plants in Scarce Plants of Britain (Stewart et al 1994). It has been recorded in c.80 of the U.K. 10km sqs. since 1987, but has not been seen in a further c.75 since 1970. Of these additional sites, some are likely to be ephemeral chance germinations, but many of them occur in its distributional heartland and signify extermination. Its full distributional status can be assessed from a date class map available on the BSBI website. In The Vascular Plant Red Data List for Great Britain, (Cheffings et al 2005) it is listed as ‘Near Threatened’ in recognition of its gradual decline in distribution.

Its exact soil and aspect preferences are difficult to determine because in the area of the bulk of the population, soil distribution patterns are very complex. The map of its eastern England distribution at the 2km sq. (tetrad) level is too coarse to discern subtle associations other than a clear coincidence with the Anglian age Chalky Boulder Clays. And even at the monad level of recording cannot be reliably assigned. In Essex we have recorded it at the 100m sq. level, and at this level certain patterns begin to emerge. The greatest density of sites is on the markedly chalky and calcareous Hanslope Association soils, on the wide, relatively flat apron of the Roding Apron, and the Broxted-Debden Ridge (see map Flora of Essex 1974. p.10). Further east the till is only present on relatively narrow dissected interfluves, and tends to be leached of its chalk content, where it forms less calcareous soils such as those of the Faulkbourne Association. The Sulphur Clover pattern clearly thins out in this area, more or less east of the north-south 70 10km grid line. Nevertheless it does manage to survive on a number of isolated till patches in VC18 (South Essex) to the south of the main mass of Chalky Boulder Clay. Further stable disjunct pockets occur on what are probably loamy Claygate Beds deposits at Gerrolds Meadow, Daws Heath, and Summerhays Meadow in One-tree Hill Country Park. Sulphur Clover is typically a pioneer species. It doesn’t require a soil as such, and in common with Bee Orchids, Pyramidal Orchid, Blue Fleabane, Hairy Violet – and before they were largely exterminated – Rockrose and Clustered Bellflower, it will colonise recently exposed raw chalky boulder clay. Like all these species it had a brief revival in the 1960s-70s when increasing motor traffic on C-class roads led to a spate of verge widenings and corner cut-offs to assist visibility, leaving raw clay for these species to occupy. Since then the practice of tarmac surfacing of minor roads has produced vast amounts of decayed road metal which have been spread on the verges, and any newly exposed verges are given a coating of top soil. Furthermore, since around 1965 minor road verges have been managed by flail mowing. Where this is incessant on relatively dry verges, the sole survivor tends to be Festuca arundinacea, Tall Fescue, which has low spreading rosettes that miss the flail and eventually dominate as a dense monoculture sward. Elsewhere, on moister verges the mowings rot and enrich the soil, encouraging nettles, thistles, docks and Cow Parsley, - instigating yet further rounds of flailing. The same effect being instantly achieved by top soiling verges with a humus rich soil. If the Chalky Boulder Clay verges were left as raw clay, they would form a low but vegetated sward such as that at the Bupleurum falcatum site at Norton Heath, where Bee Orchids, Hairy Violet and Carex flacca have dominated and formed a thin but adequate cover since 1984, without any flailing or other management, apart from scrub removal every few years. If this advice had not fallen on deaf ears for the last 30 years, Essex County Council could have saved itself a great deal of public expenditure, and it would not even be necessary to do a 1m safety cut. Apart from the fact that The Special Verges N.R. concept instigated around 1976, has largely been a failure due to lack of cooperation, or intermittent cooperation by authorities managing the verges, - as far as the Sulphur Clover is concerned we need a blanket management policy to cover all the north- west Essex verges if we are going to retain the bulk of the population, as it is impractical to have 420 ‘special verges’. Occasionally, the Chalky Boulder Clay pioneers have a windfall. An old barn may have its floor dug out to covert to a millionaires dwelling, or a ditch may be mechanically dug, resulting in raw chalky-clay being spread on local road verges. One might think that the similar activities of the utilities bringing raw clay to the surface when trenching for gas, electricity, telephone, water or cable, - would also be a welcome result. Invariably however these excavations are either ‘restored’ by top-soiling with humus rich soil, or gravel. Either way a tall weedy sward rapidly establishes requiring even more expenditure to maintain visibility.

In Essex it has now virtually disappeared as a meadow or pasture plant. Surviving colonies in this habitat occur in Takeley Hill pasture (Hatfield Forest), One Tree Hill Country Park (Summerhayes Meadow); Gerrolds Meadow, Daws Heath; the EWT Hawkes(mere)more Spring N.R. and Hylands Park, Chelmsford. A few other sites are in churchyards or along green lanes, but the bulk of them are on verges, and therefore vulnerable to abuse by farmers, dumping of decayed road metal and trenching for pipelines etc. It is therefore desirable that we strive to maintain populations in N.R.s, Country Parks and churchyards. Potentially it is actually a very easy plant to encourage. As shown by the late Charles Watson, the ripe seed heads readily reproduce on new patches of Boulder Clay if fresh gatherings are scattered [e.g. successful experiments on verges east of Hatfield Forest and on Takeley Meadow]. It does well on verges that are cut early; late April to early May, would be appropriate now that spring arrives earlier, and that are left to the late autumn before a further cut. The early cut knocks back competitors and the late cut removes the biomass. Are there any farmers out there who would like to help set up an experiment to demonstrate how verges can be managed with a minimum of effort and expense?

By recording at the 100m sq level we have established a sensitive base line so that we can monitor changes, such as the occurrence of possible new opportunist colonies, or the extermination of existing colonies. A tabulated file is available to anyone who would like to participate in the monitoring of sites or the notification of new ones. With such a large number of small sites to monitor it is inevitable that many of them have not been revisited since the 1980s.
