SYNOPSIS OF BRITISH JUNCI ( Excluding several known hybrids.) 

 

 

Flat-leaved perennials:

 

1   Juncus squarrosus stiff, channelled lvs, local heathland.  
2   Juncus tenuis introduced, spreading, heathland, particularly well trodden tracks.  
3   Juncus compressus lowest bract exceeding inflorescence, tepals light brown, much shorter than rounded/obtuse glossy capsule, very local, marshy flushes.     
4   Juncus gerardii lowest bract shorter than inflorescence, tepals dark brown, only slightly shorter than subacute to obtuse, dull capsule, strictly brackish coastal marshes.
5   Juncus trifidus    mountains of Scotland & Shetland.  
     
 

Flat-leaved annuals:

 

 6   Juncus bufonius common, damp tracks and pond margins, pale green to brownish, inner tepal apices pointed, equaling capsule.                                                                   Flowers on both long and short shoots.

 

                                                                                          

7   Juncus foliosus

local in W and S Britain.

 

8   Juncus ambiguus

very local, brackish marshes, rather blueish green, inner tepal apices rounded, exceeding capsule.                                                                                             Flowers near the ends of the shoots,      

9   Juncus planifolius                             

 

introduced, Galway.  

10 Juncus capitatus                             

very local, Cornwall & Channel Islands.  
 

Rounded (terete), transverse-septate-leaved perennials;

 

11 Juncus subnodulosus straw coloured tepals, tips blunt incurved, fens, rare in south east. 

12 Juncus alpinoarticulatus  

dark brown tepals, inner rounded, outer subacute montane marshes, northern only.  
13 Juncus articulatus light brown tepals, inner and  mucronate, inflorescence branches straggly, common in south east,neutral to alkaline marshy ground.  
14 Juncus acutiflorus dark brown tepals, inner and outer acute with recurved points, capsule tapering smoothly into acute beak, inflorescence branches      relatively compact, frequent in south east, acid marshes.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     
15 Juncus bulbosus

inflorescence usually proliferating, corm-like at base, local in wide range of damp habitats and often submerged.
